3 Simple Questions to health and happiness

Happy New Year!

Between the Winter Solstice and the New Year is the time when so many of us reflect upon the last year and what we would like to create for the new year.  I have found that by answering 3 simple questions each day I can give myself a head start on creating lasting change for my mental, emotional and physical health.

1) What food will I feed myself today?

2) How will I move my body?

3) What is my happy thought for the day?

So, why these questions?

Let’s start with #1. What food will I feed myself today? This is specific to basic nutrients. How will I get in 5 servings of fruit/vegetables, at least 5 ounces of protein, and a couple of servings of starch?  (Serving sizes are: veg/fruit = 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked; protein = 1 ounce; starch = 1/3 to 1/2 cup.) This is an approximation of what the body needs and most of us can begin our new eating plans by thinking of what we need to add before we begin to subtract!

#2 How will I move my body? Body movement and exercise is necessary for physical and mental health. It helps with weight control, is a natural mood lifter, strengthens inner organs as well as muscles and skeleton,  distributes oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and pumps lymph fluids. The better you feel physically and mentally, the better decisions you are bound to make. Exercise can be as simple as dancing in your living room. If you are out of shape you can start by walking for 5 minutes 3 times a day and building up to 30 steady minutes at your own pace. Just get moving. It is a nutrient that your body needs!

#3 What is my happy thought? The only way to make a change is to stay focused on it. The best way to stay focused is to keep the idea of the change uppermost in your mind. Not only will these 3 questions keep you focused on taking good care of yourself, but this last question will help you with your spiritual connection as well. The happy thought will help you to refocus during the day when our unconscious thoughts tend to rule. It’s best to set certain times of the day to contemplate your happy thoughts. Also, it is not enough to just think the thought; you must also allow yourself to experience it emotionally as if it was real right now. Be sure to share all this good energy with the Universe!

Answering these 3 questions first thing in the morning will help you to stay focused throughout the day and make it much more likely and much easier to make your dreams for 2014 come true!
